Your Friends and Neighbours

Dir: Neil LaBute
Star: Amy Brenneman, Aaron Eckhart, Catherine Keener, Nastassja Kinski

(Your Friends and Neighbours) - Since returning to Hollywood, Nastassja seems to have divided her time almost equally between TV mini-series, action films and social drama. This falls VERY firmly into slot #3, centering around the love lives of six people as they split up, pair up and break up again: two couples and two singles, none of whom are exactly perfect. Thereby hangs the problem, best summed up as "who cares?". For this band of dysfunctional sex-addicts remain resolutely unappealing and involving, even Kinski: despite being the most attractive lesbian I've ever seen [see also The Hotel New Hampshire in her canon], she turns out to be all whiny. The most interesting character, by some distance, is played by Jason Patric with tales of...well, I won't spoil it, but his sleazebag macho bastard will leave your flesh crawling. Otherwise, these are eminently forgettable people. I don't doubt the accuracy of the portrayals, merely the point of them, though it is probably enough to put you off any form of relationship.
